EVA Air announced on the 23rd that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Formosa Petrochemical Corporation, aiming to secure more than 20,000 tons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) supply within five years starting from 2026. Compared to conventional aviation fuel, SAF can reduce carbon emissions by an average of about 80%, and is expected to bring at least 50,000 tons of carbon reduction benefits. This MOU not only lays the foundation for both parties to deepen the development and use of sustainable fuels, but also opens a new chapter for sustainable development in Taiwan"s aviation industry.
EVA Air President Clay Sun stated that sustainable development is not only a corporate responsibility but also the core competitiveness of the future aviation industry. By using sustainable aviation fuel, reducing single-use plastics on board, and working with value chain partners to promote green transportation initiatives, EVA Air is gradually fulfilling its commitments to environmental protection and social responsibility. We hope that every flight will move towards a lower-carbon future, doing our part for the planet.
In response to the global trend of carbon reduction and environmental calls, EVA Air has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and continues to take concrete actions toward a low-carbon transformation. The airline is accelerating the use of sustainable aviation fuel and began using SAF produced by Formosa Petrochemical at major domestic airports starting April 23, 2025. By supporting local suppliers and collaborating with corporate clients and freight forwarding partners to participate in green transportation programs, EVA Air aims to reduce carbon emissions from business travel and cargo transport through the use of SAF.
Formosa Petrochemical President Lin Ke-Yan said that in the face of global climate change and carbon neutrality pressures, the company is actively investing in the research, development, and mass production of sustainable aviation fuel. By adopting co-processing technology with existing aviation fuels, they not only reduce carbon emissions but also ensure compatibility with current fuel systems, significantly lowering the barriers to transition. This not only provides airlines with competitive low-carbon options but also demonstrates Formosa Petrochemical’s responsibility and commitment during the energy transition process.
